I’ve been off Facebook since precovid, deactive so I can use messenger still.
I logged in for a specific reason yesterday and it was like one thing/person I follow or otherwise indicated interest in to 10+ “sponsored content” or “stuff you may like” or whatever they call it now.
But people treat it as a red flag because I’m not wasting my day away on that. Fucking what?

Seconding Jellyfin. I used to run XBMC as God intended on my old OG Xbox but Kodi is so bloated and garbo these days from what I’ve seen.
A vague interest in taking my data away from “Big Tech” led me to get hosting a few years back and use a private email solution professionally hosted. Last year, I bought a pi then went through a breakup and didn’t touch it until recently haha.
I just had to rebuild from scratch but I’m running Flame dashboard, Vaultwarden, Nextcloud, Baikal, and a rickroll server disguised as a Docs app, because I’m a red blooded American. :P (and the boring stuff lol)
Then it should be treated as what it is, an illegal venture based off of theft. I don’t get a legal pass to steal just because the groceries I stole got cooked into a meal and are therefore no longer the groceries I stole.
I’m 35 now, and I was told recently that not having a Facebook account is a red flag for dating now.

That’s my entire point though - You’re asking for a Reddit clone, and Lemmy isn’t meant to be a Reddit clone. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, but people need to stop demanding the devs shift gears and make it a Reddit clone.
I’ve heard it runs real nice on pi in a docker container. If you’re just using it as a private instance you wouldn’t have to worry about scaling.
I settled on lemmy.world, but yeah 90% of the lemmy related discussion I see is “Why doesn’t this work like Reddit and when can I expect it to work like Reddit?”
I’ve tried to do my part in explaining this isn’t meant to be Reddit, but I’m already seeing an increase in hostility directed at devs for the lack of central authority (which is the thing they’re fleeing in the first place but fuck me for pointing that out lol.)

90% of the engagement I’ve seen regarding Lemmy is “Why isn’t this Reddit and work exactly the same as Reddit? When WILL it work exactly the same as Reddit?”
I’m already seeing hostility a la “Well I guess we’ll see if the devs LiStEn To ThIeR uSeRs” in regards to communities getting tied to a central authority, aka the thing this was explicitly designed to not do. I made my first ever Twitter account a month or two before Musk bought it, for purely NSFW reasons. I’d log in every couple weeks or whatever, handle my business, and move along. After he bought it, I said whatever I’m not doing anything useful data wise so I’ll continue my few times a month visits.
First post-Musk visit, it’s fine. Business handled, close my incog window, move on.
Second post-Musk visit, I log in, and it’s CP as far as the eye can see. I immediately deleted my account.
That sucks.
I had already nuked my 15 year heckload of karma “main” because I ran afoul of a super mod with some fairly innocuous opinion. Got banned from one sub, confused I modmail to ask what’s wrong and how I can fix it, get muted and immediately banned from upwards of 10 other subs. 🤣
Gave em a piece of my mind and killed it, because I’ll be damned if I let some butthurt waffle bully me like the internet is some sorta “real world.”
This. Reddit and their stans keep trotting out this, what, 2% or so of “super users” as a “Who fucking cares about 2% let em cry” but -
Who tf do you think is providing the content and doing the moderation that keeps it falling apart? I learned in all this there’s a big viewership who don’t even have accounts, they’re not suddenly going to sign up and start posting and interacting out the wazoo. People who just comment and chat after work aren’t going to take up moderation duties (especially since all the stuff that made it manageable is bust.)
It can float without that 2% for a while, but it’s going to become outdated quick. You’ll lose that cultural edge of typing “Reddit” after internet searches, cause it stops working because there’s no longer ALWAYS posts about every little thing. The people bickering and providing entertainment are gone, they were all on RIF or the other app, so people stop popcorn scrolling.
I wonder if it’ll go Twitter and just start catering to the fascists cause it’s the only market left.
I’m super not knowledgeable about codecs and shit, but IIRC there’s one that the rpi 4 is just garbage at dealing with. x265 I think it’s called?
