Hosting video on a significant scale is very expensive. Stupendously expensive.

Convincing people to join is also going to cost a lot of money. Consumers are on YT because creators are there, and they are already used to the platform. Creators are there because the consumers are there. And there is a robust infrastructure to make a living from content creation.

Financing is especially difficult for such a project, because companies are willing to pay way more for targeted ads. For which you need some data about your users. The more data you collect, the better the and targeting can be, the more companies are willing to pay.
Assuming there are enough users for companies to pay for advertising at all.

If you want to work with the original project, you have to push to the server that controls the original project.

For each project there is one authoritative instance, one “server” that everyone pushes to. Otherwise you get chaos.

I remember a talk a few years ago where someone engineered controlled detonations to destroy a single server in a rack without damaging any surrounding equipment. Was pretty fun to follow the engineering.

No worse than all the tech startup names tbh.

Which is going to change once any sort of widespread adoption happens.

But at least in my circles, malware really isn’t that big of a deal in security. Phishing is where the danger is these days, where the costs occur.

If the traffic plummets, YouTube wins. Serving content to ad-blocking users only costs them money. They don’t want those users.

Did you tell them that you don’t have access to your account? Because to me, this reads like the default answer (“here’s how you do it yourself”), not like they won’t do it by email if asked to do so.

My company does the same - if you ask our support how to delete the data, they will send you a link to the customer portal. Only if you tell them that doesn’t work for you, they will work out another way.

We built the feature into the customer portal, so we want people to use it if possible. Because that’s way less work for our support team.

Notepad++ may very well be widely used as an IDE. Notepad isn’t. Other than the name they have nothing do do with each other. It’s just a plain text editor with absolutely no features. Maybe some people use it to write code but unless you can’t use anything else, even a web browser, why would you.

Normal seats on night trains suck, that’s the first thing that comes to mind. If you ever take a night train on your interrail journeys, pay extra for a bed.

I’ve been exclusively travelling by train for many years, it’s pretty great. Europe has a lot of places to see.

I feel you. When I go to Hungary, my brain breaks. In most surrounding countries, I can sort of guess common words. “Exit” is more or less the same word (vychod) in all nearby Slavic languages for example. And then there’s Hungarian where it’s probably szönözökémül or something.

Sounds like the relationship between German and Dutch. To me as an Austrian, Dutch sounds like a drunk northern German speaking half English.
