Google warns users of these apps that their experience may deteriorate soon. They may “experience buffering issues” or see errors such as “the following content is not available on this app” when trying to watch videos.
Similar to Google Search, ads have become insufferable for many users of the service. There are too many of them, they may break the viewing experience, and they may show inappropriate content.
YouTube Premium is expensive. What weights more for some users is that its functionality is severely limited when compared to third-party apps.
The cat and mouse game continues.
For those looking to avoid ads or improve privacy, here are some options for free, open source, privacy-friendly frontends to YouTube without advertisements:
Louis Rossman wants you to block all ads. Paraphrased: the fraction of a penny he might receive isn’t worth the waste of your time.

Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.
I’m open-source; check me out at GitHub.
Well that’s good but is he going to run his own massive video distribution network for free?
Did you watch the video where he explains his thoughts? It’s not easy to disagree with someone before hearing them out.
Actually its really easy. Most people do it all the time. Its incredibly stupid though.
The thing is… they are not really disagreeing if they are not saying something that conflicts or challengues the argument.
They just mistakenly believe they disagree when in fact they are agreeing. That’s what makes it stupid.
Isn’t this the same guy who wants you to use Grayjay? You shouldn’t believe some random YouTube star
This is the same Louis Rossman who is part of the FUTO organization. FUTO makes GrayJay and other tools, and funds Graphene, the FSF, VLC, and Right to Repair stuff.
Louis isn’t some Rob Braxman type.
He’s established in his field as a pretty technically competent public advocate for consumer rights.
Grayjay is not libre. I call BS on his credibility. You shouldn’t blindly follow influencers.
The source code is right here. It’s free and open source.
Am I missing something here? FUTO appears to do tons of good work so I’m not exactly sure what one non-“Libre” piece of free, open source software does to discredit them, or him.
Its not, check the license. It is a massive liability if you look at the code. They could claim that you are stealing.
This reads as extremely petty.
He’s part of an organization that also made an app that also has a license that isn’t totally perfect, therefore all his other advocacy is inherently wrong?
Cancel Louis Rossman first, and then we can reassess whether his comments here are also incorrect.
ETA: I found this article that lays out the issues about GrayJay and its license. It doesn’t deem the app, nor anyone associated with it, particularly cancel-worthy either.
Yeah, but now you’re just trolling.
You are just following
Always.
Read the room bro.
Is this “Don’t be evil!”?
They took the “don’t” out of that slogan years ago. When they decided they wanted to contract with the US military
They didn’t get rid of the “don’t.” They got rid of the whole motto.
They silently dropped that motto eons ago.
They were evil well before they dropped the motto
That’s Google this is alphabet
Google warns users of these apps that their experience may deteriorate soon. They may “experience buffering issues” or see errors such as “the following content is not available on this app” when trying to watch videos
you can just feel the evil corporate Cheshire grin behind this paragraph
If the streaming apps will be deteriorated the only option left will be yt-dlp and mpv left
as long as the content is publicly available they cannot block yt-dlp, buffer at best.
I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point they start doing something like what Twitter did and require login to view the content.
I think yt-dlp lets you use your login credentials?
Yes. The thing is that then you are no longer anonymously using yt-dlp.
The next step would be trying to detect that case… maybe adding captchas when there’s even a slight suspicion.
Perhaps even to the point of banning users (and then I hope you did not rely on the same account for gmail or others).
It’ll be a cat and mouse situation. Similar as it happened with Twitter, there are also third party apps, but many gave up.Yup, it has a
--cookies
flag to either use an exported cookies file from your browser, or if using Firefox just tell it and it’ll grab it automagically.
They might but if they do they’ll lose a huge revenue because a lot of website have Youtube videos embedded. Imagine you have to login to view an embedded video. Even website owners won’t like that because their videos won’t load automatically and they will start to seek alternative options. So I don’t think Google would take that risk soon.
It may not be too bad for users: a lot of people are simply always logged on, so they’ll not see any difference. What is the current share of Chrome?
I AINT NEVAH GONNA STAHP USING 3RD PARTY APPS
I’m just gonna use newpipe harder
Look how well that turned out for Reddit.
It’ll take a hell of a lot to deteriorate the experience to the point where it becomes just as bad as the regular youtube app.
Lmao, what you gonna try this time, Google? 🤣
They already try, so you just update to the next version. Revanced recently had a thing where every video you tried to play would redirect to another video saying to update your app. I did and it worked.
I switched invidious and everything is perfect since then
As long as Invidious continues to work I don’t care about what they’ll do
They’ll try, spend allot of money on it and they’ll fail. And even if they don’t, they won’t their money back.
Btw they are not actually failing: just a few weeks ago Invidious was completely broken, but a guy posted a PR to fix that like the day after…
That sounds a lot like failure to me…
I meant that without these people who constantly work on it, Invidious would instantly die, we shouldn’t take them for granted…Google is constantly making changes that breaks it.
Their goal isn’t to completely shut this down, Google is fully aware that that’s impossible to achieve. They just want to annoy enough people and make it complicated enough so that the userbase doesn’t grow any further.
Even problems to watch a lot of Videos in FreeTube, it listed the Videos, but don’t reproduce them. Because of this I put SMplayer as extern player, which don’t have problems to reproduce almost everything. Other possibility is to search the YT video in Andisearch, which permits to watch it sandboxed without ads in the searc results, or embedded and proxied, if the Video is restricted outside from YT (clicking on the video in this case). Front ends certainly are going worst, the best which stil work fine are LightTube and ViewTube, PokeTube for some Vids. In YT Itself you can watch it still without ads, tracking and/or nags, using these scripts in Violentmonkey or Greasymonkey, Tampermonkey is also valid, but it is proprietary soft.
YouTubeVideo&music&kidsAdBlocking
Ultimate YouTube Ad Remover and Detection Bypasser
A lot of YTubers are changing to Odysee because of this crap.
Freetube with sponsor block is a godsend.
To play advocate of the devil here (I can feel the down votes and Foss brigade already coming) : I can understand their logic. Their whole business is fucking ads. These apps bypass their entire business. Count yourself lucky they’ve ignored them this long.
YouTube premium is actually one of the only subscription services I use. My entire family gets ad free YouTube + YouTube premium. The amount of YouTube we watch and music we listen… 100% worth it. + a premium view supports creators more than a free view, so I even get to feel a bit better about myself. (I watch too many different channels to make it financially viable for myself to send them all a dollar/month through means outside of YouTube)
“you don’t understand these companies HAVE to push lies and misleading brainwashing content on us because they’ve built their entire companies on that foundation” nah get fucked try a new paradigm
I’m not arguing Google is a holy company and inheritely good. It’s just that they offer a service and in the capitalist market we live in, they want/need to be compensated. If you don’t like it, vote with your wallet. I can live with the price I pay to use YouTube. It gives me just enough joy in life that I find the monetary fee reasonable. If they would jack up the prices, I might say fuck it and find alternatives.
My whole point is that this blocking of ad blocking apps is not a surprise at all, and even understandable from a capitalist company pov.
That doesn’t mean I support capitalism and assholes making life worse for us plebs. It just means that in this particular situation, it fits with my lifestyle as a cog in the machine. It’s too much of a pita for me personally to “pirate” YouTube vids like I do with other media content.
You’re falling victim to the dumb-as-pigshit culture of downvoting good-faith opinions. Mindless downvoters: GO BACK TO REDDIT WHERE YOU BELONG.
This was a thoughtful, thought-provoking, well-expressed opinion. Thank you.
Please be just a little less aggressive. Lemmy users do not need to stoop down to Redditor tier levels. With a higher standard comes better behaviour responsibility. Remember, most of us came from Reddit because it became shit.
I really wish people remembered this
If you don’t like it, vote with your wallet
I’d say more: don’t use Youtube if you don’t like it.
It’s very hypocritical to see how everyone bashes at Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Uber, etc. and yet they continue using it as if life would be hell without the luxury of those completelly non essential brands. If you truly don’t like them, just let them die… look for alternatives. Supporting an alternative is what’s gonna hurt them the most if what you actually want is to force them to change.
There’s also a lot of videos from rich Youtube creators complaining about Youtube policies, and yet most of them don’t even try to set up channels on alternative platforms. Many creators have enough resources to even launch their own private video podcast services, and yet only very few do anything close to even attempt that.
If you don’t like it, vote with your wallet.
Not wanting to see ads is not just about money. Firefox offers the build-in Reader View mode for clutter free reading which is like a breath of fresh air. Several people including myself have problems getting too many impulses, or attention-grabbers if you wish, e.g. like web page pop-ups, banners, ads and what not. Besides that I do like to be manipulated. Now you can say : “Pay Google for no ads” but there’s the privacy aspect.
