@selfhosted Stick with Mastadon account or move over to Lemmy instance?
I’m currently self hosting my own mastadon instance, and noticed I can use the same account to post to Lemmy as well using mentions and the fediverse.
Is anybody else using mastadon to post to their lemmy instances? Would it make more sense to host a lemmy instance instead if I intent to post to lemmy more often than mastadon? Let me know your thoughts.
The two are pretty different, though. Lemmy is a link aggregator and Mastodon is a micro blogging platform.
By switching to lemmy you’d lose some of your desired functionality (IMO).
Maybe consider checking out kbin? It supports both link aggregation and microblogging, so it might be right up your alley.
You could just join a server for now and see if you like posting on lemmy!
I keep separate accounts, my head is still locked onto twitter/reddit UI setup. The formats would make me confused on the same account.
I’m posting this from Pleroma instead of Mastodon, but I think this is good enough for me.
I started with my self-hosted Mastodon instance but quickly realized that just added noise. Self-hosting Lemmy was pretty simple and now I run both.
The resource needs for a small Lemmy instance are quite low and practically nothing compared to my Mastodon instance.
Setting up Lemmy is pretty straightforward, especially if you use the recommended ansible method. You could do a brief self-host and if it works for you keep it around.
IIRC you can post and see top level comments via mastadon but nested comments will be unavailable to you. If you really like to dig into the conversation you’ll be missing out on some stuff just using mastadon.
Its more that the comments show at the same level as posts and they all come in as they are created, so it can be messy viewing the conversation. I think there is some work going on to try to fix that, but I don’t think masto will ever be the right tool to view lemmy threads.
Why aren’t these nested replies showing up on the mastodon post?
I have an account on here too lol. Have to use this one to reply to prove this point. I cannot reply to posts on mastadon, nor can I view nested comments. This was exactly the test I needed to make my choice!
I’m looking at setting up a lemmy server to overwrite the mastadon instance so I can use the same URL. I’m looking at the guide and I’m already a bit lost. (I used a droplet on DigitalOcean to auto install mastadon). If anybody has any additional resources that could help me with my install that would be great!
Have you tested this?
Nope, it was just my understanding from what I’ve read the last couple days.
I just checked and it appears that you’re correct. But there are also replies on the Mastodon instance that don’t show up here on Lemmy.world.
I think it would make more sense to have a lemmy account if you primarily spend time on lemmy.
Just because you can drive a car backwards doesn’t mean you should. It’s more efficient forward! But what ever floats your boat 🛶
