I am not sure what do you mean. I use fedora with Nvidia (it’s a different repo to activate) and my main rig is for gaming… No problem what so ever. Using Fedora since 37, what a smooth ride.

That sample text file, you can save it in the “Template” folder in your home folder, and then you can create a new file from that template with the right click menu > new entry :)

My first computer was an Oric-1, and I typed a little bit of BASIC on it, and even managed to save to a cassette tape! (never managed to reload what I saved though lol) This first computer was traded to me by a friend for I don’t remember what, but it made me interrested into computers for sure!

Next, with that same friend, I traded again and got an Atari 520 STE, that’s where the story really begins! I was about 14 at the time. Since then, I stopped leaving my room, and started to read a 500+ pages book about GFA basic. I have so good memories about the things I could do with that computer, even to nowadays standards, it’s the best computer ever! I remember I had a 30Mb hard drive in SCSI, and some accessories. It’s still at my parent’s house. I miss it.

Great list, but a couple could be added:

• btop (process/resouces monitor, highly customizable)
• lnav (log navigator, grouping folder of files in one display, search/filter etc…)

are you sure you don’t mean the opposite? Because on trackpads, it’s like on touch screen and should go in the same direction no? (I mean, from when I used a MAC, I couldn’t use natural scrolling with a mouse, but loved it with the trackpad…)

yet, the auto updates will restart your computer no matter how many programs were left open…

What I like with Linux:

• no restart behing my back to force install updates when I have pending work
• no bloat
• customizable (win11 forcing to having windows of same app groupped grinds my gears!)

Though, it’s not perfect (I guess I have slight hardware issues on my end), I feel way more relaxed (really) when using Linux than Windows.

recently, I use btop in replacement of htop, really easy to use and pretty to look at.

I submitted a ticket to Steam about some issues I had with their client, and they told be those were addressed in the Beta version.
And all my small issues I had are gone! So I can use Steam with XFCE without issue right now.
Pretty happy, really.

I am switching to XFCE to see how it goes, the fact it is lighter on resources than Gnome is a big plus ;)

A lot of input in the comments, I’ll just add mine in the mix.
I guess wanting to change the OS for someone can be good if:

• the current Windows version is EOL and/or has security issues/concerns,
• the hardware is too old to upgrade,
• the current user is fed up with crashes, popups, slowliness etc…

Now, I would go for Mint anyday instead of Ubuntu, because the default matte desktop feels more confortable when coming from windows.

As for Scrivener, I don’t even know what it is, but Wine is quite good recently, so if you’re tech/linux savy, you could try to make it work.

I tried during the week-end, and it’s a confortable and light experience.

But Steam (I game a lot on my computer) doesn’t work well, it stops showing the store page (it gets all black) when I change the virtual desktop.
I then have to display my library then click again on the store to see the content again.
Very annoying.
If it was not for that bug, I might have switched permanently.

I kept it installed and will retry from time to time if the Steam issue goes away.

I used to love XFCE many years ago, and will try to set it up again this WE.

If I type :hand then [Win+;] I expect the hand emoji section to be shown, or at least the search box to be auto-filled.
I don’t want to touch the mouse to select an emoji, I just type, select (with keyboard) and go on with my writing.
Changing focus to type a search term in a small pupup is non productive.

I rechecked just now, the search field is gone in Win11, even more useless now… M$ is not even trying, too focused on adding spyware lol
