  • There are definitely a lot of little things in gimp that make it hard. The lack of a shapetool is one(yes yes it’s not a drawing app but a basic edition helps) and other things like adding text with a black outline or shadow. After literally decades they finally added in a way to make it easier to image macro text in. The old way involved several submenus and I know I couldnt figure it out on my own without a guide.

I know sometimes people come into an opensource ecosystem and complain that everything is worse because they arent used to it, but at the same time there are a lot of open source programs that are very rough around the edges and the developer cant see it because they know the program inside and out so of course it’s intuitive that this feature is burried in here and this feature way in there.

  • Im mostly pro congestion pricing but there are two things that make me sympathetic to some of the detractors.

One issue is that well, the New York metro area as a whole is better than the rest of the country when it comes to public transit and getting people into the city. It is still has big gaps and holes. For example if you live west of the Hudson the metro north is not as complete as east and then you have towns in nj also not on the rail line. These people don’t have the means to be able to take public transit in a way that doesn’t add a significant, significant amount of time to their already long commute. And on top of that, they’re already paying pretty hefty tolls to get to and into the city on top of the car maintenance and the gas. And a lot of these people live in the far fringes of the metro area, not just because they are priced out of the closer, better connected suburbs, as well as the city itself.

The other side of the argument is that the MTA is genuinely dysfunctional. Like it was only a few years ago that the governor decided to try and do a surprise visit to see the workers working overtime and found that nobody was there. The MTA is mismanaged in all facets. I don’t blame people for being skeptical that this money will be well utilized.

That said, a large majority of people who are anti- congestion are just car-brained and do live near a convenient rail or park and ride and Would probably improve their own quality of life if they just took public transit instead of sitting in traffic every day.

  • Roe getting gutted was the result of conservative judges that got appointed to the supreme court and the states that have taken further steps to restrict are republican run states. The majority that the Dems had was very slim not enough to get a lot passed especially when the “majority” included “moderates” like Manchin and Sinema.

I agree the Dems and libs suck. If they werent so smugly sure that clinton would win 2016 they would have not played politics and forced in their supreme court pick and we would have less of a minority.

Roe getting gutted is the result of a decades long plan by the republican party and letting them them win a majority again will only make things worse.

  • At the time android didn’t have multi-tasking

Android always had multitasking. Part of the issue with android 1 and 2 was that it didnt have any way to properly manage the task managers which lead to people installing task killers(which had utility in those days) and auto task killers(which due to how android handles caching just lead to a cycle of killing, thing popping up, killing, and etc). My g1 with a swap partition was probably my best android phone at keeping things in memory without auto killing it until I got a phone with 6gigs of ram.

  • The 6 series was when google introduced the tensor which is where the stereotype for worse battery life, worse performance, and less efficient radio come from.

I have a 6a too and for the price it’s fine, and I think a lot of the battery concerns are overblown, and for a budget phone competing with other budget phone devices tensor was great. That said the things that would make the tensor in the 7 bad are as present in if not more so in the 6a.

  • Yeah and AI is pretty useful for doing certain things. For example my pixel can turn on subtitles for any video or audio playing and even translate it for me on the fly. AI isnt blockchain and it isnt all chatgtp or making images with too many fingers. People are talking about improving web standards as if whatever ai stuff google,MS, and apple are cooking up wont be used in order to enhance various web features.

Likewise firefox is currently a good browser and does keep up for the most part. I’d understand the criticisms if firefox was suck in 2009, but modern day firefox is fast and works well and they will likely continue keeping up with standards while an independent team works on the open source AI stuff
