Life is too much. If you have time for open source other parts of your life are being ignored. Do you want to be a detail obsessed nerd alone in your room fighting with 50 different things that need a special configuration that you’ll eventually get bored of and need to clean up the mess anyway? I’m so depressed and am now realizing that privacy and open source stuff is just another distraction from reality. I genuinely don’t know how others manage in life, it’s so much bigger and more vast than a screen. It’s overwhelming.

https://presearch.com works pretty well for me and it’s decentralized.
I think we might see one or more “trusted fediverse” groups emerge in the next few years, with instance admins making commitments to security controls, moderation, code of conduct, etc.
So, in theory, the lemmy software could start implementing privacy controls that allow users to limit their visibility to whichever part of the fediverse their instance admin has marked as highly trusted.
You put into words something I was thinking about earlier but better. The whole point of a federation is that every member of the federation is more or less on the same page. Currently it seems that federation/defederation decisions are being made on an individual basis rather than a collective one.
Why not just have a federation of instances dedicated to aggressive moderation, and a federation of instances devoted to being the greasiest, dirtiest cesspools of hate and despair? Then people can choose where they would like to be. Toxic trolls can have fun destroying each other while we take pleasure in constructive discussions. I guess what I’m trying to say is that each individual cluster of instances should be very clear about what they stand for and hold each other to it.

This isn’t just any election year though. 64ish governments around the world will be holding elections this year, and authoritarian populism is on the rise globally.
