  • Part of the beauty and awe I get whenever I reread that famous excerpt from Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot is the sense of how ephemeral and delicate our existence, and even the very human concept of “existence”, is. We are infinitesimally small and yet, through no fault of our own, our days, how we fill them, and the people we know hold some measure of importance to us. And it will all be gone - eventually. It’s a very somber note yet it makes me feel a certain sense of peace.

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ‘superstar,’ every ‘supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

  • I can only say I’m interested in spinning up an instance too. I’m currently on a managed VPS running AlmaLinux, so the instructions aren’t exactly plug and play. But how difficult would you say installation was?

For perspective, I’m just a used to interfacing with a normal LAMP stack, but don’t really have knowledge further than that.

  • Currently using on mobile, the larger touch area for collapsing/uncollapsing works great in practice. I also see the modified scaling, and for the most part it’s well done!

Although I can still force it to cut off some text if I find a discussion that goes deep enough. Not a huge issue though.

EDIT: I noticed that as a consequence of making the collapse activate on one click, highlighting portions of the comment (for example if you want to quote it) is now difficult. On desktop, you have to hold the mouse click then press Ctrl + C, otherwise if you let go of the click and collapse the comment, nothing is captured to the clipboard.

On Android though, since a tap and hold action on a word makes the context menu pop up, this doesn’t happen, you can select the phrase you want to copy without the comment collapsing.

I’ll probably keep using this on mobile, and use the other script for desktop.

  • I bought the Mustang Alpha and Avenger Titan pledges last year and played for quite a bit. Ran around naked in the cold of New Babbage. Passed out and woke up in Brentworth. Suited up and did some mining with my multitool. Flew the ships. Did some fetch quests. Fired a gun or two. Blew up the ships (multiple times). Had a blast.

I really think it will take years at this point to get it to where they want it to be, but in the meantime I enjoyed how the players treated it seriously, and not seriously at the same time, if that makes sense.

BTW, there’s a pretty active community on [email protected].

  • “iusearchlinux.fyi” is one of the greatest domain names ever.

This is really cool, but yeah I’m hoping that a similar directory will exist for kbin down the line. I noticed when using the magazine search function here that magazines local to the instance get listed first which is fine, but there’s no way to sort the threads/comments columns by highest to lowest. Sometimes you just want to be able to subscribe to one community/magazine which is the most active for a particular category and not clutter up your feed, even if those are on beehaw or lemmy.world.
