It’s not so much that they didn’t know it was illegal but that with a stacked supreme court it wasn’t clear (and maybe still isn’t? Not sure whether Trump can appeal this decision) whether it being obviously unconstitutional would matter.
Oh, no…it’s clear-cut extortion. And coming from the government, it’s highly illegal for them to go after independent law firms like this. What’s really bizarre, is how fast some of those law firms caved. They didn’t even fight…they just rolled over and paid the ransom.
