I, being someone who works with computers, have had some luck with most of my favorite subs being here already.
Despite that, some of my hobby ones still aren’t here. NFL exists, but it’s the same as nothing so far. Soccer I couldn’t find at first, maybe today it already does? Also, no sign of fantasy football.
I also followed a bunch of History subs, but looks like most people in Lemmy only care about science and technology.
Tell us, what is missing for you?
Welcome everyone! Just as a PSA, here’s a cross instance community explorer: https://browse.feddit.de/
This is phenomenal, thank you for sharing!
I’m trying to be the change I want to see in the world https://lemmy.ml/c/hydrohomies
A hero among men
truly the hero we need!
You’re doing God’s work
Way to go!
Not really. It’s incredibly frustrating and I’ve def lost some faith in humanity.
I thought /r/selfhosted would be ready to jump but everyone is like “but there’s no users on lemmy” and “you’ll split the community” and “we’re going to go dark for two days - that will teach them!”
Consequently there’s been no support for any single refuge.
Additionally people have set up several communities here with similar names in the past but now mods aren’t responding so it’s all a bit of a mess.
Idk which ones you’ve tried but I know there’s [email protected]
As far as the “no single refuge” thing, I think that just comes with time as people decide “imma post in this one”. Just pick one and go for it tbh.
yeah that one has one subscriber!
If you search from your own instance, I think it only shows the subscribers from your own instance. So browsing from lemmy.ml there might be one subscriber but on lemmy.world there would be 77.
Wow. Ok. That’s good to know thanks.
Actually I just noticed that when you search for say, “selfhosted” you’ll only be shown results that people have already accessed from the instance you’re on. So when you search for a community, if none are shown that doesn’t mean none exist, just that no one on your instance have accessed them yet ?
Yeah that’s correct! I use https://browse.feddit.de/ to search which seems to work across all instances.
Ah see on mine it shows as having 77, so clearly those numbers are not to be trusted.
Give it time, things are accelerating really quickly!
And for what it’s worth, people who have turned their back on Reddit and are now here, probably aren’t contributing much or at all to discussions on Reddit… So it’ll seem to skew more to voices that aren’t switching or haven’t yet.
I came from /selfhosted 😎
That’s surprising to me me, I’d expect them to move over pretty quickly, just like I’d expect from linux and open source communities (which at the very least seem to be decently active here)
I wish there was something like AskHistorians but I highly doubt I’ll ever find something that good without a solid moderation team and very strict rules. Feels like it will either be Reddit (and fuck that to be honest) or nothing.
I still can go through rabbit holes on Wikipedia at least so there’s that.
I didn’t think about how sad it will be to lose askhistorians 😞
Even with solid moderation I feel like it’d be harder than for other subs just because you really need to have a decent population of people who really know what they’re talking about for it to work
I suspect that if Reddit got that bad, centralised alternatives such as the Hive would mop up a lot of the userbase. Yes they might not come over to Lemmy, but they could be enticed if Lemmy gets a bit of a split up of beginner/advanced levels of control.
So I’m using Jerboa for android. A d I click through to the list and I see, say, atheism on one of the instances, but how to do I add that to Jerboa?
I’ve tried the search function for subscriptions too but it doesn’t come up. Am I missing something in how to sub to subs on other servers?
I have the same question, I saw somewhere to put the URL into the search and wait 10 seconds, but it still doesn’t show up :p
Better if you use the browser and use this format:
Search that (including the exclamation mark)
If you find out, please let us know
Jerboa just doesn’t seem to be very feature filled yet. Atm it’s all we really have and I’m greatful for it, but unfortunately many features are still missing outside of the standard website. Hopefully with the growing popularity things will be improved more and more.
I created mine at /c/guitars , I’m not sure if the reddit community at large will join though. I’m hesitant to push it anywhere, it feels like sleazy self promotion. I just wanna talk about my hobbies with other hobbyists, and leave all the corporate greed back at reddit.
[email protected]? neat!
yep, that’s the one :)
awesome!
Subscribed! Please, push it and be sleazy. I know I’ve seen others asking about a fretted community. Are you ok with banjos, bass, uke, etc visiting?
We welcome fretboards of all shapes and sizes
Excellent! Thank you!
You can’t change comm names right? Cus I propose fretbros as a name.
Lol nice, no I don’t think you can change community names, but I chose what I did to directly mirror the subreddit it was modeled from.
NFL exists, but it’s the same as nothing so far
Be the change!
Lemmy.ca has a hockey sub now.
Not everybody wants to moderate a community.
Don’t have to moderate, just being active and posting already makes a difference
Yes I know. But there’s a couple of NFL communities already they just need more people actually making content in them
At the same time, some people just wanna lurk. Hell, like 85% of people just wanna lurk.
Totally understandable and fine. But then you can’t complain about there being no content, that’s all.
This is all just part of being an early adopter on a platform that relies on user-generated content.
Yea, not really complaining. I knew there will be stuff that would be missing stuff by adopting it so early.
This post is aimed more to encourage people to do exactly what you said, btw. See shared interests, engage in the same discussions and all.
Absolutely! Didn’t read your post as a complaint I’m just clarifying for the other commenter 🙂
The main problem with recreating /r/NFL is it relies on news from places like Twitter, and the sort of people moving to Lemmy are likely to have also left Twitter…
nahh. my favourite subs are the braindead shitposting ones so
Need this
https://sh.itjust.works/c/braindeadmemes brand new, let’s shit some post
Create a community and let’s get to shitposting
LGBTQ+ support spaces. Lemmy has some, but not enough.
I just hope Lemmy becomes huge so niche things will start popping up, I miss specifc band and game subs like r/KGATLW and r/factorio for example. Though I have also found the searching of communities across instances to be somewhat unreliable. I’m also hoping for some good meme communities to flourish.
its going to take time, but I have a feeling things will accelerate quickly. I am here permanaently, now just need to create and find reasons for others to join me/us.
Hello there, Gizzard bro.
They’re heeeeeeeere…
I’m really pleased by how many are starting anew on Lemmy. I giggled like a little kid when I saw HydroHomies was already up.
I hate to say it but shitposts and circlejerks are a bit part of my reddit browsing to lighten the mood.
Otherwise, trash like terriblefacebookmemes and idiotsincars was great entertainment for some reason…
I don’t know why I am like this.
Edit: to extend on this, seeing a post about some crazy shit play out and then reading everyone react to it is so much fun.
Yes, actually. r/programmerhumor and r/anarchychess although on different instances are just like they were over at reddit.
Can you share the links to those? Thank you
Not sure about chess, but [email protected]
For r/soccer there’s [email protected] although I’m hoping [email protected] takes off instead.
It doesn’t look like there’s enough sports related content so something like [email protected] might have more engagement.
+1 for football over soccer
Ideally, futebol >
futebol is lyfeeeeeee
Most of my intrests are there and have some activity. Mainly the computerstuff and all. But others exist but aren’t active. Take for example kpop, japanese music, horses, the elder scrolls. I wouldn’t mind a community for western style RPGs as those are nearly the only games I play, with a few exeptions. General gaming ones seem too general for me, too little I care about.
I am trying to post here, but also don’t want to spam a community with only my posts and make it looks like some kind of echo chamber. Feels like a delicate balance on the (nearly) inactive ones.
I had a similar dilemma with the various (inactive) gamedev communities but honestly just picked one, started a couple of threads a day apart to avoid spamming, and things picked up from there. Sometimes all it takes is one person, it’s worth a try!
