Typically an HTTP 503 error indicates that a server is temporarily overloaded. In kbin.social’s case, I’ve sporadically seen these errors over the past few days.

However, the error page displayed on kbin.social doesn’t mention load (or even mention the error code other than in the title). It presently says:

We are working on resolving the issues

Over the next few days, there will be a change in server infrastructure. Temporary problems with the website’s functionality may occur during this time.

If it is desirable that users “spread out” a bit to other instances, register accounts there and use those, it might be a good idea to, on the error page, suggest that as a remedy, maybe even link to https://kbin.fediverse.observer to help people find another instance.

I know that there are other instances registering people – @lohrun, the fediverse.boo admin, specifically posted on this magazine yesterday that he’d set up his kbin instance to help take some of the load off and welcomed new users. I’m sure that there are others. If it’s desired that that happen, this might be a good way to facilitate that.
