I seem to be missing something about the process.

Some followable kbin places show up when I search Communities, but how do I go about following one that Beehaw doesn’t already apparently know about?

At this particular moment, you don’t. Kbin added CloudFlare to cache and prevent attacks, but this also created issues with their federation

Can you follow Kbin magazines from fedia.io at the moment? You can follow Lemmy communities from there, so I was wondering if that works both ways. Presumably if it does then it should be possible to follow kbin.social magazines eventually.

I believe so. Again, the main blocker is kbin had to enable CloudFlare due to user overload and unfortunately that breaks federation. Given time the issue should solve itself hopefully.

Cool, thanks. So I guess my question is how you search for a kbin instance from Lemmy? If I search for [email protected] for instance I only get results from lemmy threads rather than the magazine itself.

Try searching without the exclamation point? I think that’s all you need to do. I’m new to the Fediverse too. I believe whilst usually federation is instant the massive influx of users means there’s a delay at the moment, so all content should appear as expected as the servers grow and stabilize to match the influx of Reddit refugees.
