  • For the most part I haven’t kept track. One of them wound up getting a PhD, moving far away, and becoming a decent person. I’m also pretty sure he wouldn’t have considered himself a bully. I also probably was guilty of bullying to an extent because I wasn’t a paragon of maturity when I was young. The guy who might’ve called me a bully went on to become an accomplished author (accomplished enough that it’s his sole source of income).

In my own life, while I’m arguably less successful than either, I’ve accomplished pretty much everything that was important to me in terms of family and money, so I guess everything turned out for everyone. I could give a shit about the worst bullies, so I really have no idea about them.

  • I get what you’re saying. Every denial reason is just a code for this is too expensive. The reason itself might be grounds to argue, but they are just going to try to deny it again with a different reason code.

To your original point, I agree that we should ask ourselves if it’s worth hundreds of thousands of dollars just to keep a vegetable breathing for a few more days. Frankly if I were in that shape, I know death would be a kindness.

But I will say it seems immoral to leave the decision in the hands of the profit-makers.

  • I don’t have a problem with foreign workers at all. Most of my teams have been at least 50% foreign workers. Often more. And I’ve made some good relationships with folks I’m happy to recommend for any positions.

I think the changes you suggest would fix the problem for everyone. The workers wouldn’t be so attractive for companies while still being available for hire. However, as currently implemented, I oppose any expansion to H1B.

I spent 5 months out of work last year, and I’m not even particularly well paid (quite poorly, in fact, for a 28 year veteran) because I can’t move my family west. We clearly don’t need to bring in more cheaper labor.

  • I occasionally throw folks a month or two sub when I appreciate their posting free content here or wherever. My roundabout way of supporting small platforms like Lemmy or Mastodon by making sure content creators are encouraged to continue posting.

Weirdly, perhaps, I don’t watch any of it to get off. I just appreciate what they are putting out into the world. It generally turns out the content made to retain subscribers is very different from the content to entice them in the first place and I enjoy the latter much more.
